4th of July 2023

Took the opportunity to enjoy an extended stay on the boat for the 4th of July weekend. We took off Friday night and returned on Wednesday afternoon! It was a nice stay only one evening with some turbulent weather, otherwise we had a great time!

Spent Friday night getting settled for the long stay, visited Overboard Bar and Grill for a quick bite, then off to the yacht club for a visit with some of our friends.

Saturday, we were under threat of rain most of the day, we went and got groceries, washed down the boat, visited the pool, and relaxed. We did end up having to make an emergency repair of the air conditioning on the boat! That sucked up a couple of hours! The fan stopped running we cleaned the strainer, and realized there was an air lock in the line that cools the unit. We made a trip to the hardware store, and eventually, we got it fixed. By “we,” I definitely mean Andy!

Eventually, we got the mess cleaned up, and we decided to walk into town and visit some of our favorite stops, including the Baithouse River Bar and Mr. Ed’s. We danced, drank, and stumbled home. It was an absolute blast!

Sunday, we started off with a quick trip to Cedar Point, we rode a few roller coasters and had some lunch and enjoyed the view from the new Boardwalk restaurant! We spent some time at the pool, visited the yacht club, and wrapped up with a gorgeous night on the deck of the boat!

Monday brought with it some great weather! We washed the mayflies off the boat, spent some more time at the pool, and enjoyed a campfire with friends at the end of night!

On returning to the boat we noticed that our underwater lights had attracted a large school of crappie and a few bass, it was fun watching them eat the mayflies off the surface of the water, and even more fun watching Andy trying to catch them with his bare hands lol!

Next up was the main event! Our 4th of July celebration! The weather turned out gorgeous! Andy enjoyed beer with our neighbor using a beer bong known as a freedom funnel. If you know, you know. Then off to the pool! Eventually, a quick trip out to the sandbar where we rafted off with the Bombalicki’s to enjoy some swimming, dinner, and after dark fireworks!

It was an awesome weekend full of fun and relaxation! We are home this weekend for some much needed time to work on things here, I will write a bit about our experiences with on-board repairs, and navigating after dark, there’s a lot to cover there, more than I want to take on in this post.

We ended our trip with lunch at Dock’s Beach House Restaurant, cleaned down the boat yet again, and made the two hour drive home to get ready for the rest of our week! We hope everyone had an amazing holiday weekend! Till next time~ Courtney and Andy Bailey

Lakefront Yacht Club, Cruise Out, Huron, OH

We returned this past weekend from an awesome trip to Huron Boat Basin Marina in Huron, OH. This is about an hour and a half run from our home port traveling at 22- 24 mph. The weather was great, and the lake was calm, heading over. We had one boat follow us over, seven others came in the night before a few stragglers followed later in the day, for a total of 12 boats from our yacht club in attendance for the cruise out!

2 minute time lapse, Port Clinton to Huron OH, Lake Erie

This was a particularly exciting event for me because as the Fleet Captain for this season, I am in charge of the arrangements for on-water activities for the club. In some ways, I agonized over finding just the right place to go,and this ended up being perfect!

Huron, OH is a small historic town on the Erie coastline, just east of Sandusky. The Boat Basin Marina is a horseshoe shaped Marina with seasonal and transient dockage available. It is directly next to the Huron Yacht Club and the Rotary Amphitheater.

Within walking distance of the marina, you’ll find a variety of bars and restaurants. There is a nearby fishing pier, beach, and lighthouse. There is also a Comfort Inn Hotel very nearby.

As a group, we paid a visit to our friends at the Huron Yacht Club and enjoyed a drink together.

Later in the evening, we had an LYC family picnic at the pavilion before heading off on our own adventures for the night.

It was a beautiful weekend, very relaxing location, Live music is available at a number of bars too. The overall feel of this location is very different than say the party vibes of Put In Bay, family friendly, and relaxing! Next up is the long 4th of July weekend! Thanks for following along~Courtney Bailey

Father’s Day at the Bay

The beautiful weather on Father’s Day weekend inspired us to take off for Put In Bay! The sunny hazy morning made for perfect cruising conditions, and the marina was surprisingly empty when we arrived around 10 am on Saturday morning. We were able to get a great dockside slip on the C dock.

We went to lunch at the Keys restaurant and headed to Cooper’s Woods for a quick walk. The weather was perfect, warm, and sunny!

Later in the evening we found some great music and a few good drinks! The frozen drinks made with fresh fruit at Frosty Bar are divine! Give them a try!!

Sunday, we headed back to Port Clinton and grabbed a late lunch before coming home to visit with my Dad! It was a great weekend, very relaxing and just what Andy needed for his Father’s Day away!

Up next is our annual Lakefront Yacht Club cruise out to Huron, Ohio! Don’t miss out on the fun, I’ll have all the details here soon!

The Making of a Boat Dog

It finally happened! We took our sweet little guy Eli to the boat! You may be wondering why this has taken us so long to do, but if you have ever met Eli, then you probably have a good idea.

Eli is an 8-year-old doxi-pom, half daschund, and half pomeranian. He is about 11 lbs, very stubborn, and loves to hear the sound of his own voice. He is a home body who thinks he likes to go for walks and gives up halfway, and wants to be carried 😆. He is very cute and loves his Mom, which in truth is a that matters, lol!

In preparation for his big trip, I purchased a new soft side crate, treats, leash and harness, and a bark box! I have a handheld bark box, but I have to be present to use it. It emits a noise that he doesn’t like and immediately calms him and makes him quiet. The one we just purchased works automatically when the dog barks it emits the noise until he stops. Now, all I have to do is set it out where he can see it, and I don’t have to turn it on. He knows if the bark box is out, he needs to be quiet. It works like a charm!

We packed up, secured Eli in his new crate in the back seat with his blanket, and headed out for the 2 hour drive to Port Clinton! We stopped in Belleville for a quick pit stop and arrived in Port Clinton by around 1030am! He did great with the long drive! So far, so good!

Ready to go!

It’s not surprising that he does not like the step from the dock to the boat and vice versa. So we had to carry him aboard each time, which is fine with me. At least I know once on board he’s not brave enough to take off on his own!

We visited the dog park, went for walks, and sat and relaxed on the boat. Andy and I went to dinner without him and put him in his crate while we were away. He apparently spent that time learning how zippers work and broke out of his doggy jail to be found hanging out in front of the air conditioning vent when we returned. He didn’t have any accidents, and didn’t destroy anything, so I guess all in all we can’t complain!

I was very pleased with how Eli did while on the boat. He stayed calm, seemed to enjoy the trip, and slept for hours when we got home! It completely exhausted him, lol! He is well on his way to being a great little boat dog, at least for short trips. Thanks for following along with us~ Courtney Bailey

So sleepy

Provisioning the Boat for a Long Weekend

One of the more difficult aspects of boating to get used to is learning the best ways to stock your fridge and pantry areas for long weekends or extended stays aboard. There is an art to provisioning!

Most cruiser style boats that are under 40 feet in length will have 1 or 2 small mini-fridges with freezer shelves. This does not provide much room for cold storage, and many people will often also have a large cooler for cold storage options. In addition to cold storage there are usually a few drawers and cabinet spaces for dry storage.

Our boat, “The Other Side,” has 2 mini fridges and a separate ice maker. We use the refrigerator on the deck for drink storage and keep food items in the refrigerator in the galley.

Fortunately, we are only provisioning typically for 2 people. We often buy items like sandwich meat, cheese, and pre-made side dishes in small containers. In addition to the items that we need to keep cold, we also buy non-perishable items to snack on, which will easily be stored in the cabinets

We tend to buy breakfast and lunch items for on the boat and plan to eat out for dinner on most evenings. This also helps us keep our storage options open.

Common breakfast items for us can include: yogurt, bagels with cream cheese, or protein bars. I occasionally will pre-cook hardboiled eggs and bring those down in Tupperware. These are great for breakfast, to top salads, or chop up for egg salad sandwiches. Look for items like that, where you can pre-prepare them for multiple uses or options. We also enjoy our morning coffee, make sure you look for shelf stable creamer to save room in the refrigerator!

As I mentioned before, we often keep simple sandwiches and side dishes for mid-day meals or light dinners. Look for flat resealable packages for simple storing and smaller containers for side dishes.

Snacks are usually the easiest. We like popcorn, protein bars, fresh apples, or crackers. Once in a while, I will make charcuterie boxes that can be kept in the fridge with meats, cheeses, olives, and pickles. I have seen online where people are calling these snackle boxes, lol!

Remember, bananas are bad luck on boats! Especially fishing boats! 🎣 SO say no to bananas when you’re stocking up. Why are banana’s bad luck on a boat? It is an unusual nautical superstition that began in the 1700’s that are still persistent today. When trade ships sailing from the Caribbean & Spain started to disappear, legend has it that only the curved yellow fruits would be found floating amongst the wreckages. Seafarers believed the bananas had caused the ship to sink, which led to many rumors back at dock and throughout the seas.

If you’d prefer to make dinner on the boat, then there are a couple of methods that it seems people prefer for dinner preparation aboard the boat. The first is obviously grilling. Almost all of the marinas now have picnic areas with gas grills available to do your own cooking. An easy way to be ready to grill is to pre-package and prep your meals so that you don’t have to carry a large number of items to the grilling area or store them on the boat. I like food prep containers or even better foil packet meals that are ready to be tossed on the grill and include your protein, veggies, and rice or potatoes. It’s an awesome way to store as little as possible and still enjoy a great meal on the boat!

The other potential option is to have a crock pot on board the boat! You can use this to make pulled chicken, chili, one pot dinner,or other casseroles. Slow cooked proteins always taste amazing. You can even cook ribs in the crock pot and then finish them on the grill! Again, preparing these meals at home and bringing as few separate ingredients as possible is what makes this such an appealing option!

So learning how to provision your boat really comes down to recognizing how you like to eat, doing a lot of at home prep before going to the boat, being mindful of buying shelf stable items in lieu of items needing refrigeration, and generally staying organized! After that, the sky is the limit. You can have everything from snacks and light lunches to 5 star meals with just a little preparation and planning! I will start sharing some of our favorite recipes here soon, too! In the meantime, bon appetite and happy boating! ~Courtney Bailey

Jolly Roger’s Seafood House, Port Clinton, Ohio

If you’re visiting the Port Clinton area and you’re looking for a perfect plate of fresh Lake Erie Walleye or Perch, look no further than the “best little fish house around” Jolly Roger’s Seafood House.

This local gem boasts ample seating with lake views, a lovely farmhouse decor feel, friendly staff, and some absolutely delicious food! They carry a simple menu but still accommodate every taste and appetite. They have appetizers, individual main course or side dishes, dinner plates, power salads (my favorite), and more.

Andy and our friends Kim and Chad all had Walleye or Perch platters, I had a power salad, and we ate outdoors on the patio with perfect Lake Erie lakefront views!

If you plan to visit, plan to wait in line, a very long line, that extends into the parking lot. Just wait in the line. It moves quickly, and you will not be disappointed!

Once inside, you can place your order, get your drinks, and find your seat. The friendly and efficient staff will bring your meal out to you, hot and fresh!

Port Clinton, Ohio is lucky to have this great establishment. I highly recommend a visit if you’re in the area. Enjoy!

Memorial Day Weekend 2023

The unofficial kick off to the summer was this past weekend, in Port Clinton Ohio. We had a nice long four-day weekend to enjoy some time with friends and get some sun!

We spent Friday running our errands, getting the boat washed down, and settling in for some much-needed time to relax. The Western Basin of Lake Erie is experiencing a midge hatch right now so bugs, bugs everywhere! Midges look like mosquito larvae or tiny mosquitos, they don’t bite but instead fly around everywhere, and dirty up your boat! lol!! A thorough wash down was really needed so we took care of that right away, stocked up the fridge, and got our clothes and bags put away. It wasn’t long before we were ready to meet up with some friends.

Our good friend Kim and Chad joined us for part of the weekend we met up at the marina and headed out for dinner and a quick walk around to see the sights in Port Clinton as the Walleye Festival was just kicking off for the weekend.

The Walleye Festival is an annual event that brings hundreds of people into downtown Port Clinton. This annual celebration coincides with the Memorial Day Weekend events, and includes carnival rides, food trucks, and vendor tents. This year they added a small outdoor stage that hosted live local entertainers all weekend. Memorial Day tributes include a local parade, 5K race, kids fishing derby, and a ceremony honoring local fallen heroes. It is no surprise that this event brings in huge crowds every year!

This was also the opening weekend for the main street entertainment social district in Port Clinton. The main stage has been erected in the one block area of Madison St. in downtown, it was full of talented bands and acts all weekend and will now remain there until the end of the season. Live music is available on the main stage on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with 2 acts daily. The local bars and restaurants also have their outdoor bar areas set up for the season, so get your MORA cups ready and give them all a try, just remember you must finish what is in your cup before entering a new establishment, and any alcoholic beverages must be in the specified MORA container per the social district rules. Watch for signage on where you are allowed to carry your drinks.

In addition to the Walleye Festival, we enjoyed a quick trip with Kim and Chad to the Marblehead Lighthouse! This is a gorgeous lighthouse on the Lake Erie coast, from the top you can see all of the Lake Erie Islands, Cedar Point, and the Catawba Island area. It is 74 steps to the top, and it was a gorgeous day to check it out! We visited the light keepers house, now a museum and gift shop, as well as a replica coast guard station. We got lots of walking in and returned to town where we enjoyed a quick burger at Overboard Bar and Grill, and later dinner at Jolly Rogers, more on that later.

We capped the night off with a bonfire by the lake, it was a perfect evening to sit by the fire and listen to the waves come off the lake.

Sunday was a laid-back day at the pool, followed by a night out with friends.

And Monday we took a long walk around town, a quick meal, and started packing and heading for home! It was a fun-filled, packed weekend, and just what we needed after a busy week! Now, back to the grind, before this coming weekend, where we introduce our little dog Eli to the boat for the first time ever… wish us luck he’s a stubborn little guy! Till next time, thanks for following along! ~Courtney Bailey

Last Weekends Shananigans~May 18th-21st 2023

Well, this past weekend was a whirlwind of fun! There are so many things to share! First off, on Thursday, May 18th, Andrew and I made our way to Fort Wayne, IN, where we attended the Kenny Chesney, I Go Back Tour, concert! It was absolutely amazing. We have wanted to see him live for so long, and our kids are the best and got us tickets for Christmas this year! Again, such an awesome experience.

Kelsea Ballerini opened for him, and her performance was outstanding. As a singer song writer, you can tell already what a wonderful long and successful career in music she is setting herself up for! I’m so glad that we had the opportunity to see her as well!

Kenny Chesney puts on a show like no other, though! The excitement and energy were outstanding it was a lively fun crowd, all around a great show! This was a bucket list experience that we can now check off the list!

After the concert we headed back to the lake! We gave the boat a quick wash down and met Brianna and Jake at the marina, where we boarded and headed out to Put In Bay, OH. This is one of our favorite islands to visit, I will be sharing reviews of various bars, restaurants, festivals, and accommodations on the island. This weekend was a much slower weekend as it is still a bit in the preseason for activities on the island. However, there was still a ton of entertainment on the island this past weekend. It was “Victoria weekend” on the island where we celebrate our Canadian friends to the North. Brianna and Jake stayed with friends at the Commodore Perry Hotel and Conference Center while celebrating their friends’ 21st birthday. Some of our friends tagged along with that group, and it was great to see them, too!

We came in on Friday and pretty much had pick of space on the dock as it was a slow weekend, so we were on the main A dock great access, no rafting, and excellent service from the dock hands.

The company was great, the weather was great, and “The Other Side” performed fantastically on the lake this weekend! Can’t wait to see what the upcoming holiday weekend will hold. We are still deciding on final plans, but we will keep you posted!

The Great Loop

As promised, here is everything you need to know about our ultimate goal of completing the Great Loop.

The Great Loop is a continuous recreational waterway that mariners are able to travel. It includes the Great Lakes, Erie Canal, Eastern United States coastline, and portions of the Mississippi and Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. The entire Loop is approximately 6000 miles. It takes on average nine months to one year to complete the full Loop. Most travelers make way through Northern waters in the summer months and winter in the southern or gulf states. Fewer than 200 boaters take on the Loop annually, making it an elite trip.

The Great Loop

Our plan is to prepare ourselves as boaters through Coast Guard training and captain certifications. Practice maneuvering the boat so if something happened either of us can safely pilot us into port. And, yes, one more boat upgrade will be necessary before we take on this adventure. There is no specific sized boat recommended for the loop but we need to be comfortable living aboard for 1 year, and it can not exceed 19 ft in height, or draft more than 5.5 ft under the water in order to clear fixed bridges. That being said, we have put a 5 year goal in place to prepare for our time to complete the Loop!

Boater’s who are “looping” are given a white burgee, and once complete, they are given a gold burgee, indicating that they have completed the Loop, there is also a platinum burgee for those who have completed the Loop multiple times. The American Great Loop Cruisers’ Association or (AGLCA) assists Great Loop cruisers by sharing safety and navigational cruising information, while providing a networking platform for Loopers through it’s members-only discussion forum, where fellow boater’s share their experiences, recommend marinas and stops, help with locking through, water depths, and hazards. The AGLCA also hosts annual Looper events for those who have completed the Loop or are preparing to begin the Loop.

There is no specific starting or ending point for the Great Loop and there are several recommendations for different routes depending on the type of boat and type of experience you want to have while on the Loop! Average fuel usage to make the entire Loop is over 8000 gallons and depends on cruising speed and vessel size.

There is still lots to learn, as we prepare, and we can’t wait to share it with you! Thanks for joining us on our big adventure! Next up, our Lake Erie adventures for this season!

Choosing Our Home Port

Welcome back! Today I thought I would talk a little bit about choosing a home port, or where your boat is normally docked, and how we came to be in Port Clinton Ohio! We are native Michiganders and still live in Jackson MI. However, we decided to travel to Port Clinton Ohio for boating because of some key factors that we were failing to find in areas closer to home. So, here are some of the factors that we used when deciding on our home port.

First for us was accessibility to the areas and islands that we love to visit most often. Having been frequent visitors to Put in Bay, Ohio we knew we wanted to have that access. We also have aspirations to travel toward, Toledo, Detroit, and Lake Saint Claire areas when considering northern ports of call, and Sandusky and Cleveland in the Southeast when considering new areas to explore.

Our next consideration was the area around the marina, we wanted to be somewhere with some activity, and that was walkable from our boat. We enjoy an active lifestyle with vibrant nightlife and music scene, so we took that all into consideration. We also wanted to have nearby hotels and RV parks, in case we had friends or family visit us.

We also looked at Lake access, were there large channels with long no wake zones before hitting the open water, or was there quick access to the lake. Another factor here was other boating traffic. Would we be dealing with a lot of large freighters, fishing boats, cruise ships, or ferry boats. These are all valid considerations, and if you’re in the process of choosing a home port, you’ll have to decide for yourself what you are comfortable navigating on and off the water.

So having considered all of these things, we decided that Port Clinton Ohio checked off a lot of boxes for us. It is a very laid back, comfortable, walkable town. They offer a wide variety of live entertainment options including music, festivals, and bazaars. There are hotels, motels, and inn’s available, and tons of rental cottages, and campgrounds too. They have a robust restaurant and bar scene, and being a fishing town there is always and amazing perch or walleye recipe on the menu! Gorgeous parks, public beaches, and sand bars made this the perfect area for us.

In addition to what the town had to offer we looked at the various marina’s available and found one we love. Safe Harbor Lakefront marina is conveniently located with great lake access and gives a central starting point to travel to all of the areas we were interested in travelling to. There is little to no freighter traffic, lots of fishing charter traffic, and two ferry routes to be aware of in that area, but generally the boating traffic around us is reasonable and safe. One of the things we really appreciated about the marina was the fact that it has direct lake access, no long channels to navigate before hitting the open water! They also have a lot of amenities in the marina that we had been looking for including, on-site service department, winter storage, laundry, bathhouse, swimming pool, fire pits, pavilion with grills and picnic tables, and a yacht club (more on that soon), it’s very well cared for, clean, and well maintained, they also have their own gas dock and pump out station which is a huge benefit!

We couldn’t be happier with our choice to call Port Clinton our Home Port. We have really enjoyed the small town atmosphere and local entertainment. It has been a great choice for us. Thanks for following our journey! ~Courtney Bailey
